Laser pulse contrast, defined as the ratio of peak intensity of the main pulse to its pedestal. Extremely high contrast of ~10^10 is required for femtosecond lasers with peak power of hundreds of terawatt to petawatt. Third order autocorrelator is commonly used for laser pulse contrast measurement. Such a technique provides the information about amplified stimulated emission (ASE) contrast pre-pulses and post-pulses. Presently dynamic range of 13 orders along with scanning range of a few nanoseconds can be achieved.
